An open letter on AI to my prospective clients
I felt compelled to write a brief statement on my stance on AI, ChatGPT and the state of my industry. I will direct any future clients or prospective clients to this brief post, for them to better understand my position.
I will not be using, dealing with or working “alongside” AI at all in my business. It has not been, and will never be, a part of my work process. This is a moral, ethical and professional stance I hold, and a “hill I’ll die on”, so to speak.
I have loved researching and writing since I was old enough to hold a pencil. It, thankfully, became my career, my biggest passion and a skill I grafted to learn and that I pride myself on. I have never required a computer program to assist me in doing what I do best.
Now, with the rapid acceleration of AI into all of our lives (something I reject on almost all fronts), writers and copywriters are the first on the chopping block - and this is evident to all of us. There will be no “integrating AI” into our work processes to “help us”. No. Businesses simply won’t hire us, and will instead rely on poor-quality, unfeeling output from programs like ChatGPT, which is also proven to have a political bias.
300 million jobs are due to be taken by AI in the coming years.
Humans will be redundant and obselete. I won’t be participating in this in my life, nor my business. I integrate human connection, empathy and life experience into my work. AI is the antithesis of that. People have never been more disconnected, alienated and isolated from their communities, and I refuse to play a part in hammering in the final nail into the coffin of mental illness and widespread unhappiness.
AI also poses many additional personal privacy threats, including cloning voices and faces, and using this for nefarious purposes. Using this technology means that you are actively playing a role in this ever-growing and ever-present threat.
I am a human being with many facets to my personality. All of my life experiences - the high and lows - play a role in how I work.
I pride myself on my ethics, my history of producing exceptional work for my clients and my deep love of my job, and artificial intelligence does not play a role in that - and will not be. Ever.
I have very strong feelings about this topic, but felt compelled to post a brief overview of this to my blog (entirely written by me, a human).
If you’re looking to hire a copywriter that will be using AI, I will have to politely decline. My clients know this isn’t an option for me, professionally or ethically.
Thank you,
Felicity
