4. Madagascar
Where it is: Southeastern Africa
Population: 28 million
Language: French and Malagesy
The thought of Madagascar may conjure up mental imagery of, well, the movie. And while the country itself is indeed home to cute lemurs (they are only native to Madagascar), the island nation is so much more than that! Located off the southeastern coast of Africa, Madagascar is a huge island - one of the largest in the world. Its history is one of political upheaval, and today, while it is a unique holiday destination that tourists do visit, it’s important to read up on its fluctuating levels of crime and how to stay safe before planning a trip here.
It’s a shame that Madagascar is often in an unstable state, as the country has so much to offer to visitors. Sprawling deserts, rolling plains, a plethora of national parks, unique baobab trees, coral-fringed reefs, white sand beaches and turquoise Indian Ocean waters are just the beginning of what this gem of a natural landscape boasts. The inland capital city of Antananarivo sits at a towering 4,199 feet above sea level, making it the highest altitude capital on Earth!

5. Albania
Where it is: Southeastern Europe
Population: 2.8 million
Language: Albanian
Each year, thousands of tourists eschew the same long-trekked tourist trails of Europe for more unknown, unique holiday destinations that feel untouched and untapped. Enter Albania, a country that has exploded in popularity in recent years. And rightfully so. The Balkan nation, located on some of southeastern Europe’s most picturesque coastline, has it all, at a fraction of the cost of Italy or Greece, which lies to its south. Turquoise Adriatic waters and pristine beaches fringed by swaying palms, hidden lagoons, flowing rivers, ancient archaeological relics, the Albanian Alps, a rich and complex history and some of Europe’s best food are just some highlights of a trip to Albania.
Albania may be a small country, but it packs a punch, and its capital Tirana is only the beginning of the delights that await you. The majority-Islamic nation is a magnet for lovers of historic castles, Roman amphitheatres and authentic culture, and its draw is that it’s perfect for lovers of the city, sea or mountains. See Albania before it ceases being Europe’s best kept secret.

6. Mongolia
Where it is: Eastern Asia
Population: 3.3 million
Language: Mongolian
Wedged between Russia and China, and a gateway to both on the iconic Trans Siberian Railway, Mongolia is an ancient landlocked country that has some of the most rugged, vast landscapes in the world. Forged by the Mongol Empire, Mongolia is a huge country by size, and also one of the most sparsely populated on the planet. Mongolia’s topography is wild and beautiful, marked by huge swaths of desert (the renowned Gobi Desert is located in its southern region), rocky mountain ranges, large lakes deep in cavernous valleys and pristine forests.
Mongolia is also a safe country for tourists, and crime outside of the capital, Ulaanbaatar, is rare. The majority of Mongolia identify as Buddhist, and the country and its people has a distinctly relaxed, respectful and friendly vibe. The locals love traditional music, and take their rich culture seriously. Getting around Mongolia is also relatively easy, despite its size. You can even ride a yak or camel, or stay in a traditional Mongolian yurt in the wilderness. Mongolian food is another highlight of visiting this enormous country, and is heavy on meat.

7. Oman
Where it is: Western Asia / Middle East
Population: 4.5 million
Language: Arabic
Oman is a little-known little country that has some serious mystique to it. In fact, its capital is Muscat, even sounds mysterious and decadent. The sultanate, an incredibly rich country, has a prime position on the Arabian Sea and as a result, is home to some seriously underrated coastline. However, the beauty of Oman doesn’t end there. It’s also home to towering mountain ranges and Arabian deserts that stretch as far as the eye can see. The cities are bustling with souks, grand Mosques and luxury hotels, while the ocean waters here ensure the diving is world class.
Omanis are known for being extremely friendly and welcoming, however it’s important to note that the nation is Islamic, and strict in its rules. Alcohol is banned here, as are same-sex relationships and PDAs, and modest dress codes apply. While Oman is a fascinating, visually stunning country, if you are eager for a more relaxed holiday without a long checklist of expectations, you might want to forego this one.

8. Ghana
Where it is: Western Africa
Population: 33 million
Language: Akan
While it’s recommended to avoid large swathes of West Africa due to constant political and social instability, Ghana is a country in this part of the world that tourists feel mostly safe visiting, and often fall in love with. Densely populated and bustling at any time of day or night, the cities and villages of Ghana are crackling with energy, particularly its capital, Accra. The nation is lucky enough to have an alluring coastline dotted by untouched beaches, as well as dense rainforests, vast grasslands, abundant forests and boundless savannahs. It’s also blessed with a tropical climate that is comfortable year-round.
Spend your days exploring local markets, lounging on picture-perfect beaches, learning about the engrossing history of the country or hiking in glorious national parks, home to native elephants. Ghana is an up-and-coming African destination, and while a degree of crime is to be expected, tourists should feel safe sticking to the busier parts. Ghanaians are warm and friendly people and eager to show off all that makes them proud of their vibrant country.

9. Bhutan
Where it is: South-Central Asia
Population: 777,000
Language: Bhutanese
If you haven’t heard of the kingdom of Bhutan, you aren’t alone. But not having heard of Bhutan means that this stunning nation is still a well-kept secret - luckily for you! Located in the eastern Himalayas, right between China and India, this small but mighty landlocked country is one of dramatic landscapes that are yet to be discovered on a large scale. Bhutan exists under a monarchy, but is a Buddhist nation with a very low crime rate, where even petty crime is rare. It’s peppered with amazing Buddhist landmarks, temples and fortresses, all with a to-die-for backdrop of the Himalayas.
If you’re in the market for ample time in the outdoors and a spot of R&R, Bhutan is where it’s at. Hike in the local mountains, dotted by charming villages and strung with colourful prayer flags, and marvel at impressive gorges, rushing rivers and lush forests. 70% of Bhutan is forested, after all. The country puts a lot of emphasis on sustainability, too. Return to your accommodation at the end of a day of exploration for a relaxing hot stone bath - an enjoyable tradition in Bhutan. If you love chilli, and the hotter your food the better, you’ll be thrilled to know Bhutan is famous for its red chillies. Finally, It’s important to note that while it is in southern Asia, Bhutan is quite expensive to visit. Until 2022, the country also charged a rather crazy $250 per day tourist fee, but these prices are now dropping dramatically (I’m unsure of how much it is now), to welcome more tourists. So definitely factor that in too.

10. Greenland
Where it is: Northern America
Population: 56,000
Language: Greenlandic
Wrapping up my list of the top 10 most unique holiday destinations in the world is Greenland, an enormous country often confused with Iceland, despite being entirely different in every conceivable way. Technically located in North America and not Northern Europe - surprisingly - Greenland is actually an autonomous territory of Denmark. It also has the lowest population density in the world. Just 56,000 people share a country that is the 12th largest in the world. This is because 75% of Greenland is actually uninhabitable and covered by a giant ice sheet.
However, despite most of Greenland being off-limits, the parts that aren’t are unique and beautiful, and well worth exploring. The locals here live in cute as a button, cookie-cutter houses, and you’ll see many in Nuuk, the capital. Of course, many head to Greenland for their unparalled views of the Northern Lights, but the country is also recommended for fishing (and ice fishing), hiking, biking, diving, whale watching, glacier hikes and more. Today, many cruise companies operate trips to Greenland, which are an easier way to see the best parts of this wild country than trying to do it yourself.
Where should I visit in Greenland?
Nuuk (capital city)
Scoresby Sound
Illulissat Fjord
Northeast Greenland National Park
Sermermiut
Jakobshavn Glacier
